Manalom Na Kita: Listening to the Reef, Listening to the People

Last July 10, law students from Ateneo de Davao joined Green Juris in an eye-opening educational activity entitled “Manalom Na Kita”, held at Paradise Reef in Samal Island. As the Supreme Court recently granted the issuance of a Writ of Kalikasan against the current alignment of the Samal Island-Davao City Connector (SIDC) Project, and denied the prayer for a Temporary Environmental Protection Order (TEPO), this event became more than just an environmental dive—it became a call to action.
Our ecoknights snorkeled above transects of coral reef now facing irreversible damage from the ongoing construction. Beneath the surface, we saw the reef’s vibrant marine life slowly struggling against sedimentation and disturbance. But it wasn’t just the reef we came to hear—it was the voices of the fisherfolk, too.
We listened to their stories—of dwindling fish catch, of displacement, and of fear for what tomorrow might bring if the reef dies. These are not just environmental issues; these are issues of livelihood, dignity, and survival.
“Manalom Na Kita” reminded us that environmental law must always be grounded in the realities of the people. Through this activity, we reaffirmed our stand: we are not against a bridge; we are for a better bridge—one that respects nature, protects communities, and builds a future where no one is left behind.
