The energy landscape in the Philippines is at a crossroads, and the JET 2025 Power 101 Symposium, held on March 27, 2025, at Ateneo de Davao University, proved to be a crucial platform for discussing its future. Law and political science students gathered to engage with leading experts on the pressing issues of the country’s power industry, the role of renewable energy, and the Just Energy Transition.

The symposium featured esteemed speakers from Aboitiz Power, including Atty. Kevin Chris Sese, Atty. Janette R. Ancog, JK Huyatid, and Atty. Alona Suzell Ruyeras-Borromeo, CPA. They provided in-depth insights into the Electric Power Industry Reform Act (EPIRA), which restructured the power sector through privatization. Discussions tackled the ongoing challenges of the energy trilemma—balancing energy security, energy equity, and environmental sustainability—while also emphasizing the shift toward renewable energy sources.

One of the key takeaways from the event was the need for legal and policy reforms to ensure a fair and sustainable transition. The speakers highlighted how the Just Energy Transition is not just an environmental issue but a socioeconomic one, requiring policies that promote accessible, affordable, and reliable energy for all. Future policymakers must craft energy laws that not only promote sustainability but also ensure equitable access and long-term security for all Filipinos.

The success of the symposium was made possible through the collaboration of Green Juris, the unwavering support of College of Law Dean Manuel P. Quibod, SAMAPULA (Samahan ng mga Mag-Aaral ng Agham Pampulitika ng Ateneo), and Aboitiz Power Corporation.

As the country moves toward a cleaner and more equitable energy future, forums like these serve as vital platforms for fostering dialogue, raising awareness, and inspiring the next generation of policymakers and legal minds to take action.

Join us in championing a sustainable energy future—be part of the conversation and drive change today!
